Lakeside and Kennedy Students Team Up to Beautify Hewlett House Gardens

Students from the Lakeside Elementary School student council recently joined forces with members of the student government at John F. Kennedy High School to beautify the grounds at Hewlett House, a local support center for individuals and families affected by cancer.
A dozen Lakeside student council members and their siblings teamed up with more than 30 John F. Kennedy High School students, led by faculty advisor Brad Seidman, for the community service project.
Together, the students weeded the front and back gardens and planted numerous shrubs and colorful annual flowers throughout the property.
In two of the garden beds, students carefully planted pink impatiens in meaningful designs, one in the shape of a heart and the other in the shape of the breast cancer awareness ribbon.
“The Hewlett House is a special place where people battling cancer can go for support and comfort,” explained Lakeside student Ben F. “It was a privilege to plant at the Hewlett House.”
According to Lakeside Student Government faculty advisor Soo Becchina, Hewlett House director Geri Barish was “thrilled with the work that was accomplished that day.”
“We are hoping that the beautiful flowers help to brighten the days of the patients who receive services from there,” noted Becchina.
Ben F. added that he and his peers felt a strong sense of pride while participating in the project.
“Because we were able to help people in our community in a great way,” added Ben F. “It was a great experience getting to work with other students. Planting the flowers showed us that even a small act of kindness can make a big difference.”
