Hallways buzzed once again as the Merrick School District opened its doors for the 2026-27 school year on Sept. 1, greeting pre-kindergarten through sixth graders at Lakeside, Chatterton, and Birch.

Between decorated classrooms, enthusiastic staff, and backpacks stuffed with fresh supplies, the first day captured the excitement and promise of a brand-new year.

Superintendent Diana Ketcham once again visited a local bus stop on the first day, chatting with students and families before riding the bus to school alongside them.

"Watching our students arrive at school on day one reminds us why we do this work,” she said. “Every child deserves a place where they feel supported, challenged, and excited to learn, and that's exactly what our schools aim to provide."
