Belonging Committee

The Merrick School District developed the Belonging Committee to focus their diversity, equity and inclusion work through a lens of belonging and dignity. A well-known author and consultant, John Krownapple, is working with the committee to ensure that all staff and students feel represented, valued, appreciated, accepted and treated fairly in our school district. A committee of faculty members, administrators, family members and Board members have been meeting with the consultant since May 2022.

To involve people from our school and family communities who were not part of the Belonging Committee, we planned various ways where people can lend their voice and share their thoughts with the committee. We asked our families, teachers and staff to complete a Belonging Survey or participate in a focus group in January 2023.

At the end of January, the Belonging Committee met to review the results of the Belonging Surveys from the staff, families and teachers. About 45% of the staff, 12% of the families and 96% of the teachers completed the surveys. Sixteen parents attended our focus groups in all three buildings.
The feedback received from the climate surveys, belonging surveys and the focus groups were analyzed by the committee and an action plan was created.  You can access it by clicking the link below.
